Recording sessions have been informal,taking place at the houses of the storytellers. There is a certain amount ofbitterness amongst the old people that the younger Bardipeople predominantly use English.Each story has been recorded in Bardi, and usually inEnglish as well. Moregenerally the purpose was to put down on paper and ontape Bardi knowledge that is not being passed on toyounger generations. A later aim will be topublish a selection of the stories, since the elders feel itis important to show that Bardi is a rich and fullydeveloped language, just as good as French or German(BOH.37 2 ), and they feel that their views are notrepresented in records of Kimberley history. Theoral history text project continues the wishes of one ofthe senior men (who has now passed away), who wasalso responsible for instigating the work which led tothe publication of the Bardi dictionary, ArdiyooloonBardi Ngaanka (Aklif 1999). We havefocused on recent social history in particular moregenerally we have recorded anything that the eldershave wanted to talk about or have thought important toinclude in a documentation of Bardi culture.The project was initiated by the elders themselves. The aim is to make a record of theexperiences, history and culture of Bardi people,through the medium of the Bardi language. 1The Bardi oral history projectThe Bardi Oral History Project is oral history in thebroadest sense. I do notwant to ascribe to Bardi community members views thatthey may not in fact hold, and I do not wish to beperceived as a spokesperson for the Bardi community. The paper is written from thisperspective only because the paper had to be put intofinal form for the conference proceedings before I coulddiscuss these issues and the contents of the paper inperson with the relevant community members. We would also welcome feedback.Another purpose is to present a linguist’s view ofworking as an outsider on culturally sensitive materials.This is not because I wish to exclude Indigenous viewsof this subject, far from it. One is tooutline the methodology of the Bardi oral history projectparticipants in dealing with texts of this type and theissues that they raise, so that others may benefit fromour experiences. We areincorporating the older materials (with corrections andcommentary) into the current project.This paper has a few different purposes. The corpus is a major linguistic and culturalresource, although not without its problems. Theproject was initiated by a few of the senior women andthey have been the main contributors to it.Another part of the project has been the use of texts inBardi, Bard and Jawi, recorded by Gerhardt Laves inabout 1930. The main aim of the project is to documentBardi social history over the last hundred years, thechanges in lifestyle that Bardi people have undergoneand the effects of mission life on traditional culture.
